Navbar (Top Menu) and Mobile Menu Design
The Navbar is the bar at the top of every page of your store. This article explains how to arrange its blocks, how to manage menu items, and how to…
Where to find it: Theme Editor → page menu → Structure → Header Structure → click the Navbar component on the canvas → Properties in the right panel Who it's for: Anyone who wants to build the store's top bar (logo, menu, search, cart) their own way and customize the menu that opens on phones In short: The Navbar is the bar at the top of every page of your store. This article explains how to arrange its blocks, how to manage menu items, and how to design the mobile menu that opens on phones.
What is it for?
The first thing a visitor sees when they open your store is the bar at the top: logo on the left, categories in the middle, search and cart on the right. We call this bar the Navbar. It stays in place whether the visitor moves to a product page or into the cart, which is why you edit it once inside the Header Structure rather than page by page.
On phones there is no room for the menu items, so they are hidden and a small menu button (three lines) takes their place. Tapping it slides a panel in from the side. That panel is the mobile menu, and you can now design it too.
Most of your customers shop from a phone. After you set up the desktop menu, switch to the phone view and open the mobile menu at least once.
Where do I edit the Navbar?
The Navbar component lives inside the Header Structure. To get there:
- In the top toolbar, click the page name next to your store name.
- In the list that opens, pick Header Structure under the Structure heading.
- Click the top bar on the canvas. The right panel switches to Properties and shows the Navbar settings.
What happens on other pages? On the Home Page or a custom page the top bar is still drawn on the canvas, but it cannot be edited there; it is only a preview. Hover over it for a moment or click it and a small card appears: "This area is edited in the Header Structure." The Edit Header Structure button on the card takes you straight there. The same card appears for the footer at the bottom of the page, labelled Footer Structure. To dismiss the card, click the **** in its corner or anywhere else on the page.
Setting groups
When the Navbar is selected, the right panel shows these tabs:
| Tab | What's inside |
|---|---|
| Composition | The skeleton of the bar: preset layout, number of rows, blocks, block placement, mobile menu design. This is where most of the work happens. |
| Background | Bar color, opacity, blur effect. |
| Appearance | Text and menu colors, hover color, bottom border color, shadow. |
| Layout | Padding, margin, gap between blocks, maximum width of the bar. |
| Visibility | Hide the bar on certain devices. |
| Advanced | Custom ID and custom CSS class (for technical needs; normally left empty). |
Composition: the skeleton of the bar
Start from a preset
Pick a starting template from the Preset list. The template places the blocks for you; you can move any of them afterwards.
| Preset | How it looks |
|---|---|
| Logo Left | Logo on the left, menu in the middle, search / cart / profile on the right. The most common layout. |
| Logo Center | Menu on the left, logo in the middle, search / cart / profile on the right. A boutique look. |
| Two Rows | Logo + a wide search box + cart in the top row, menu in the bottom row. For stores with many categories. |
| Classic Two Rows | Logo and search / cart / profile in the top row, left-aligned menu in the bottom row. |
| Custom | Arrange everything yourself. The moment you move a block by hand the preset switches to Custom anyway. |
Rows makes the bar One Row or Two Rows. With two rows the bottom row is usually reserved for the menu.
General settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Header Type | Static: the bar scrolls away with the page. Sticky: it always stays at the top of the screen. Sticky (hides on scroll down): it disappears while scrolling down and comes back when scrolling up, keeping the screen uncluttered. |
| Transparent on Home | On the home page the bar starts transparent, sitting on top of the big image below it, and gains its color once you scroll. Looks great over a hero image. |
| Transparent on Other Pages | Applies the same effect on other pages. If a page doesn't start with a dark image the text may become hard to read, so use with care. |
| Bottom Border | Draws a thin line under the bar. |
| Divider Between Rows | Puts a line between the rows in a two-row layout. |
If you use a transparent bar, upload a white logo into the Transparent Mode Logo field of the Logo block. That logo shows while the bar is transparent; the normal one shows once it gains color.
Blocks
The bar is made of blocks. Add the ones you want from the buttons under Blocks; a new block lands in Row 1 → Right first, then you move it.
| Block | What it does | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Logo | Text or image logo. Links to the home page. | 1 |
| Menu | Categories and links; owner of the dropdowns. Becomes the mobile menu on phones. | 1 |
| Search | An icon or an open search box. | 1 |
| Cart | Cart icon; shows a badge when the cart has items. | 1 |
| Profile | Sign in / My Account button. | 1 |
| Custom Button | A highlighted button such as "Campaigns" or "Contact us". | As many as you like |
| Social Icons | Instagram, WhatsApp and similar icons. | As many as you like |
| Spacer | Pushes two blocks apart; has no settings. | As many as you like |
Single-instance blocks (Logo, Menu, Search, Cart, Profile) appear greyed out once they are already on the bar.
Placing blocks
Each row has three boxes: Left / Center / Right. Grab a block by its name and drag it into another box. When you are over a box its border turns dashed; drop it there.
Every block row has two small icons:
- Gear () — opens the block's own settings (see below).
- Trash — removes the block from the bar. For Custom Button and Social Icons blocks the settings are deleted too; you have to add the block again to get them back.
Row Settings, to the right of the row title, lets you change that row's Height, Block Gap, Vertical Align, Columns (three columns or a single wide one), Horizontal Align and Width.
The Mobile row
At the bottom of the block list there is a separate row titled Mobile. It decides how the bar looks on phones: because space is tight, the desktop arrangement is not reused; this one is. Default: Menu button on the left, Logo in the center, Cart on the right. Drag a block here as well to choose where it appears on phones. The same block can sit in a desktop row and in the Mobile row at the same time.
Don't squeeze more than three or four blocks into the phone bar. Moving search and profile into the mobile menu (see below) looks cleaner and saves space.
A block's settings
Click the gear on a block row; its settings open right underneath. Each block also has Mobile / Tablet / Desktop switches; turning one on hides the block on that device.
| Block | Settings |
|---|---|
| Logo | Logo Type (Text / Image), Logo Text or Logo Image, Transparent Mode Logo, Logo Width / Height. |
| Menu | All the menu items. See "Menu items" below. |
| Search | Display: Icon (opens a search window when clicked) or Open Input (a box that is always visible in the bar). With the icon you choose Icon only / Icon + Text / Text only, a label and an icon; with the box you set the Placeholder text and Button Width. |
| Cart | Display (icon / icon + text / text), label, icon, Show Badge (number of items in the cart). |
| Profile | Display and label. |
| Custom Button | Link (link picker), Style (Filled, Secondary, Outlined, Ghost, Link, Destructive), Button Color, icon and icon color. |
| Social Icons | A list of platforms; switch each one on and give it a Link (URL), style, color and icon. Add Custom Platform for anything not on the list. Each platform has its own device visibility too. |
Menu items
Click the gear on the Menu block to open the list of menu items. Drag items to reorder them, use the trash icon to delete them.
Adding items
There are three ways:
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add from Category | Opens your category list; the top categories you pick are added together with their subcategories. |
| Add Custom Link | Adds an empty item; you pick where it links to (a page, a blog post, an external address, and so on). |
| Auto-populate from Categories | Clears the current list and builds a fresh menu from all of your top categories. Ideal for a quick start. |
Auto-populate from Categories removes the items you added by hand as well. Run it first, add custom links afterwards.
An item's settings
Click an item row to expand it:
- Link — where the item goes. Picking a link also renames the item to the link's name.
- Dropdown Menu Style — if the item has subcategories, how they open on hover:
| Style | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Auto | The system decides based on the number of sub-items. Pick this if unsure. |
| None | No dropdown; the item is a plain link. |
| Simple List | A short vertical list. For up to five subcategories. |
| Columns | Subcategories side by side in columns, each with its own sub-items. |
| Mega Grid | A big full-width grid. For stores with many categories. |
| Card Grid | Boxes with icons (up to four). |
| Icon List | A short list with icons. |
| Sidebar | A list on the left, the selected category's sub-items on the right. |
| Mega Featured | Columns plus a featured image area on the right. |
| Mega Divider | Columns separated by lines plus a large image on the right. |
- Featured Image / Title / Link — only visible for Mega Featured and Mega Divider; they fill the promo area on the right.
- Sub Items — the categories under the item. You can Add Sub Item by hand, reorder by dragging and give each one its own link.
Showing a menu item as a button
To make an item stand out (say, "Sale") turn on Show as Button. In the area that opens:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Style | Filled, Secondary, Outlined, Ghost, Link, Destructive. |
| Button Color | The button's background. The Default tab uses the theme color; you can pick Solid or Gradient. |
| Hover Background | The background color when the mouse is over the button. |
| Hover Text Color | The text color when the mouse is over the button. |
| Icon, Icon Position, Icon Color | Adds an icon to the button. |
If you set a Hover Background but no Hover Text Color, the text keeps its color. With a dark hover background remember to switch the text to a light color too.
Bulk actions
Under the list, Bulk Actions offers AI Suggest Icons for All, which proposes an icon for every item, and Bulk Button Style, which lets you Apply to All a single style.
Colors and appearance
Background tab:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Background Color | The color of the bar. Pick a theme color or a custom one. |
| Opacity | Below 100 the bar becomes semi-transparent and the content underneath shows through slightly. |
| Blur | Blurs what is behind a semi-transparent bar (frosted-glass effect). |
| Opaque on Scroll | Semi-transparent at the top of the page, fully colored once you scroll. Works only with a sticky bar. |
Appearance tab:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text Color | Logo text and the general text color. |
| Menu Text Color | The normal color of menu items. |
| Menu Hover Color | The text color a menu item takes when the mouse is over it. Items shown as buttons use their own hover settings instead. |
| Border Color | The color of the line when the bottom border is on. |
| Shadow | A shadow under the bar. |
The Layout tab holds Padding, Margin, Slot Gap (space between the blocks inside one area) and Max Width (how many pixels the bar's content may spread across).
Mobile menu design
The panel that opens from the menu button on phones used to have a fixed look. Now the Menu Design button at the top right of the Mobile row in the Composition tab lets you set it up your way. The button opens a settings area titled Mobile Menu Design below the panel.
The settings are grouped into five small boxes:
Layout
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Opens From | Should the panel slide in from the Left or the Right? If your menu button sits on the right, opening from the right feels more natural. |
| Panel Width | 240–420 pixels. On narrow phones the panel never overflows the screen; a small gap is kept at the edge. |
Content
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show Title and Title Text | The heading at the top of the panel. Left empty it reads "Menu". |
| Show Logo | Puts your logo next to the heading. |
| Search Box | Adds a search box at the top of the panel. Removing the Search block from the phone bar and putting it here is a good idea. |
| Account Link | Adds a Sign In link (when not signed in) or My Account link at the bottom of the panel. |
| Custom Buttons | Shows the Custom Button blocks from the bar at the bottom of the panel as well. |
| Social Icons | Lines up the icons from the Social Icons block at the bottom of the panel. |
| Footer Note | A small line at the very bottom: opening hours, a support number and the like. |
Menu Items
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Item Style | Plain: a bare list. Divided: a thin line between items. Pills: a softly colored box when tapped. Bold Headings: top-level items in bold capitals, sub-items normal. |
| Item Size | Small / Medium / Large. Try Large for easier tapping. |
| Submenus | Collapsible: subcategories open with an arrow. Always open: every subcategory is visible from the start; good for stores with few categories. |
Colors
There are three colors: Background, Text Color and Accent Color (used on tap and hover). Each comes with a Theme color switch that is on by default; in that state your store's general theme colors are used, and when the theme changes the mobile menu follows. For a different color, turn the switch off and pick from the color picker that appears.
For a dark mobile menu make only the Background dark and the Text Color light; the Accent Color can stay on the theme color.
Menu Button
The three-line button in the bar itself:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Button Icon | Another icon instead of the three lines. Left empty, the default three lines are used. |
| Button Label | Text next to the icon, such as "Menu". Empty means icon only. |
| Button Style | Plain (icon only), Outlined, Filled (solid in the theme color). |
The Reset to Default button at the bottom returns every mobile menu setting to its starting value.
Step by step: a dark mobile menu that opens from the right
- Go to the Header Structure, click the Navbar, and in the Composition tab press Menu Design on the Mobile row.
- Opens From: Right. In the Mobile row drag the Menu block into Right and the Cart into Left.
- Turn on Search Box and Account Link.
- Under Colors, switch off Theme color for Background and pick a dark color; pick white for Text Color.
- Item Style: Divided, Item Size: Large.
- Switch the top toolbar to the Mobile view and click the menu button on the canvas; the panel opens and you see the result.
- Happy with it? Save and Publish.
To see the mobile menu on the canvas just switch the device view to Mobile; clicking the menu button opens the panel inside the canvas and every setting change shows immediately.
Frequently asked
Q: I set a hover color on a menu item but nothing changes. A: There are two separate settings. Ordinary items use Appearance → Menu Hover Color. Items with Show as Button turned on use the button's own Hover Background and Hover Text Color; the general setting does not affect them.
Q: The menu items don't show on my phone. A: That is expected. On phones the items are not in the bar; they are listed in the panel that opens from the menu button. If the menu button itself is missing, make sure the Menu block is in the Mobile row.
Q: My Custom Buttons don't appear in the mobile menu. A: Check that Menu Design → Content → Custom Buttons is on and that the bar has at least one Custom Button block. The panel takes its buttons from the Custom Button blocks on the bar; you don't add them separately.
Q: I want the social icons in the mobile menu too. A: Turn on Menu Design → Content → Social Icons. The icons and links come from the Social Icons block on the bar.
Q: The logo looks too big on phones. A: The Logo block's Logo Width / Height are shared between desktop and phone; Composition settings are not split per device. Pick a height that works on both (32–40 pixels is enough for most stores), or remove the logo from the Mobile row and move it into the panel heading with Show Logo in the mobile menu.
Q: I made a change but it doesn't show on the site. A: The Header Structure has to be published like any page. Press Publish in the top bar. Without publishing it is only visible in the editor.
Q: I want a different menu on just one page. A: The Navbar is shared by every page. For a different bar on a single page you can turn off Show Header Structure in that page's edit window and add a separate Navbar component inside the page; but do this only when you really need to, because you then have to keep two menus up to date.
