Variants (Definition Pool)
The central pool of product options (Color, Size, Material...). You define them here once, then select them on your products.
Where to find: Catalog → Definitions → Variants card Who it's for: Anyone who wants to define product options like Color and Size once and use them across many products In short: The central pool of product options (Color, Size, Material...). You define them here once, then select them on your products.
Is this the same thing as the variant on a product?
The two are connected but different — it's important not to confuse them:
- Here (Definitions → Variants): The pool/dictionary of variant types. A variant called "Color" and its values (Red, Blue) are defined once here.
- The Variant card on a product: When making a product variable, you select "Color" from this pool here and create the combination table.
Summary: Here you define, on the product you use. (For usage on the product, see Variants (Color, Size, etc.).)

| Column | What does it show? |
|---|---|
| (Checkbox) | Selects the row. |

| Type | Badge: Color or Option. |
| Display type | How it will be shown to the customer (e.g. "Color Pill", "Dropdown Menu"). |

Two variant types
When adding a new variant, you select a Type:
| Type | What for? | Its values |
|---|---|---|
| Option | Text-based options. | E.g. Size: S, M, L, XL. |
| Color | Color options. | A color + name for each color (e.g. Red). |
Display type (how will the customer see it?)
In what form will the customer select this variant on the product page? There are 7 options:
| Display type | What does the customer see? |
|---|---|
| Dropdown Menu | A list that opens when clicked. |
| Radio Button | Round buttons selectable side by side. |
| Named Radio Button | Selection buttons with a name written on them. |
| Image Button | Each option with a small image. |
| Color Pill | Small colored circles (ideal for color variants). |
| Image Card | Cards with a large image. |
| Grid Button | Buttons in a grid layout. |
Tip: For a color variant, Color Pill, and for size, Radio Button or Grid Button are the most commonly used and most understandable options.
Adding a new variant — step by step (Color example)
- Click the + New variant button. A panel opens ("Variant name and type are required.").
- Type a Variant name: e.g. "Color". (Required.)
- If you wish, add a Description (a short note).
- Select a Type: "Color".
- Select a Display type: "Color Pill".
- In the Values section, click the Add value button. For each color:
- Click the color box and select the color (e.g. red).
- Type the color name in the box next to it (e.g. "Red").
- Pressing Enter adds a new value row.
- If you turn on the "Use image" switch, you can assign an image (pattern/texture) instead of a color.
- You can sort the values with the up/down arrow buttons.
- Click the Add button. A "Variant added" notification appears.
For the Option type (e.g. Size) the same steps apply; you just type text instead of a color (S, M, L...). After each value, a new row is added with Enter.
Editing and deleting
- Edit: ⋮ → Edit. You can add and remove values and sort them.
- Delete: ⋮ → Delete. Confirmation: "Are you sure you want to delete the ... variant?"
Before deleting a variant, think about the products using it; if the variant is removed, those products' options are affected.
Frequently asked
Do I define the same "Color" variant from scratch on every product? No! You define it once here; on each product you just select it. That's the beauty of it.
When is "Use image" useful? For options that can't be shown with a flat color: patterned fabric, wood texture, marbling, etc. You put a small image instead of a color.
