Where to find: Customer List → click a customer → Marketing Consent card; when adding a customer, the Add Member form Who it's for: Anyone who wants to know which customers receive campaign and flow emails, and to record consent correctly when adding a customer by hand In short: A customer account gets marketing consent only if the customer ticks the consent box themselves (opt-in). Accounts created through paths where the box is not shown start without consent; the customer can grant it later in My Account › Profile. Every consent stores the time, the text the customer saw and the source.
How does an account get consent?
| How the account was created | Is there a consent box? | Result |
|---|---|---|
Sign-up page (/register) | Yes, unticked by default | Consented if ticked, otherwise no consent |
| Sign-in/sign-up dialog (header, cart, favourites, product question and the dialog opened during checkout) | Yes, unticked by default | Consented if ticked, otherwise no consent |
| Google / Apple sign-in | No | The account is created without consent |
| Added from the panel (Customers → Add Member) | Optional box, unticked by default | Tick it only if the customer explicitly consented to you |
When consent is given, the following is recorded: the consent time, the consent text the customer saw, the source (sign-up page, sign-in/sign-up dialog, panel or My Account › Profile) and, for consents given in the storefront, the IP address. No IP is stored for consents recorded in the panel; the staff member who did it appears in the Activity Log (Activity Log).
If you hide the box on the sign-up page (theme editor → Register Form → Show Marketing Consent off), accounts created with that form start without consent. Hiding the consent box does not mean consenting.
How does the customer change consent?
- Ticking the box in My Account › Profile grants consent (a new consent time and text are stored); unticking it withdraws consent.
- The unsubscribe link in emails withdraws consent.
- When consent is withdrawn, the newsletter subscription for the same email is closed too.
Saving the profile with the box already ticked (for example after changing only the name or phone) does not count as a new consent; consent is written only when the box changes.
You cannot switch consent on or off from the panel; only the customer can. The only related action in the panel is Unsubscribe under Marketing → Subscribers: if a customer account is registered with that email, the confirmation dialog says so and the account's consent is withdrawn too.
The Marketing Consent card on the customer profile
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Consented | The customer explicitly consented; the consent time and source are shown on the card. |
| Treated as consented (no evidence) | The account was created before the opt-in rule and is treated as consented; no consent time or text is recorded. |
| Did not consent | No consent was given when the account was created (box left unticked, Google/Apple sign-in or added from the panel without the box). |
| Withdrew consent | The customer withdrew consent; the withdrawal time is shown on the card. |
| No consent | The account had been excluded from marketing before the opt-in rule (the box was left unticked at sign-up or the customer used an unsubscribe link). |
The card also shows Email marketing: Receives / Does not receive. A customer who did not consent but separately subscribed to the newsletter with an active subscription (confirmed, if double opt-in is on) receives email marketing only; the card shows this as a note.
Who receives marketing emails?
| Account status | No newsletter subscription | Active subscriber | Pending confirmation / No consent record | Unsubscribed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Consented | Receives | Receives | Receives | Receives |
| Treated as consented (no evidence) | Receives | Receives | Receives | Does not receive |
| Did not consent | Does not receive | Receives | Does not receive | Does not receive |
| Withdrew consent | Does not receive | Receives (subscribed again later) | Does not receive | Does not receive |
| No consent | Does not receive | Does not receive | Does not receive | Does not receive |
- The same rule is used for Email Campaigns audiences, Email Flows (including birthday, abandoned cart and no order for a while) and the skip reasons in the campaign preview.
- A Consented customer is not treated as unconsented because of an old unsubscribe: a customer who unsubscribes becomes Withdrew consent; consenting again is a new decision.
- The marketing consent sent with purchase events to advertising platforms looks only at the account consent; a newsletter subscription does not grant it.
FAQ
Why do my existing customers show "Treated as consented (no evidence)"? Accounts created before the opt-in rule did not store a consent time or text. Their status has not been changed for now; they keep receiving emails and can switch consent off in My Account › Profile.
My customer who signs in with Google does not get campaign emails. Google/Apple sign-in has no consent box; the account is created without consent. The customer can grant consent in My Account › Profile or subscribe to the newsletter.
I collected consent on paper in the store; how do I record it in the panel? When adding the customer with Add Member, tick The customer consented to marketing messages. You cannot change an existing customer's consent from the panel.
